What IS a Perlino/Cremello?
Cremello and Perlino horses are known as "double dilutes", horses which
received two copies of the same creme dilution gene that creates palomino
and buckskin colors with a single copy. They are just like any other
normal, solid colored horse.
When two creme dilute parents (Palomino or Buckskin) are bred together,
there is a 25% chance that the resulting foal may get one creme dilute
gene from each parent, and be a double-dilute (Cremello or Perlino). The
pale double diluted color appeals to some people, and not others: but
regardless of whether you personally find it attractive, the fact remains
that it is just another color, no different in any way that matters.
Cremellos and Perlinos always pass at least one dilution gene to their
offspring creating the desirable colors of palomino and buckskin in
addition to smoky black, smoky cream, cremello, and perlino depending upon
the color of the mare or stallion. |
