I admit I really like to shop for riding shirts, pants, boots, etc. and other apparel when I am in the tack stores or doing on line shopping. It seems that there is always something I like or think I need, therefore I have collected quite a bit of “stuff” over the years. The key to shopping for the riding apparel you need is not to buy on impulse, which in the past is what I have done. Try to think first of what you will need for the type of riding you do, then make a list of specific items you are looking for and start shopping.
Here are four items that I keep on hand all the time for both western and English riding:
Western Boots: I am partial to these because of all the designs and styles that there are to choose from and you can easily tie up a great deal of money when purchasing a high dollar pair. You want to find a pair that is comfortable and has a good fit, no pinching or rubbing, that only leads to blisters and sores. Think of it like your saddle and saddle pad on your horses back you want a proper fit.
English Boots: This boot is a must when competing in the show ring or pulling them on over the some denim English riding pants, when you have a pair that are broken in they feel great. Make sure you follow a sizing chart when purchasing them there are sizes you will have to know to get the proper fit with these high top fitting boots. The purpose and design of the boot is to protect your legs from getting pinched by the stirrup leathers, ouch!
Chaps: These are an optional item to own, but in my case I like them because they help me hold a better seat when riding English or western. I have noticed some really nice ones are available for western show riding and these can be custom made to give you that exact fit your looking for. The colors can also coordinate with your saddle pads and or shirts for show ring riding.
Hats: I have several hats collected over the years, mine are mainly for pleasure riding. The straw designed hats are fun to create a shape that suits you, either rolled up on each side, or bent down over the eyes. The felt hats add a finishing touch whether you want a dressier style for the show ring or one to wear when riding the trails. There are many hat styles to choose from, try a couple to see how they look on you.
Gloves: A good pair of riding gloves, especially in winter months is a have to for me, my hands are like ice cubes if I don’t wear them. Invest in a good pair of thinsulated gloves when riding on colder days and for the summer they have a mesh or crochet style for warmer weather. They offer a better grip when your hands slip from sweat on the reins, consider also the leather ones to have on hand as well.
Here are just a few items to think about when you start the riding experience or when you need to replace some of your older essentials. All items are available for the young riders out there too, many of us start out as child riders and never grow tired of it, I know I never did. Have safe and happy trails.
