Horse Winter Blanket
Can I lunge my horse in his winter blanket?
Since it is like 30 degrees (F) outside, we put our horses winter blankets on. If it is a fairly mild day, but still cold out, is it ok to still lunge my horse with his blanket on? Thanks!

I would take it off. You don’t want him to get hot and sweat, especially if it’s waterproof. It will trap the moisture under the blanket and make it so he can’t dry entirely. If he gets sweaty and you put him out in the cold, he could catch cold. He won’t get sick if you take it off to work him, let him dry out and put it back on. I live in Maine and it is usually much colder than that here in the winter. We use the indoor, which has soft footing to keep everyone’s hooves and legs healthy and remove blankets before work. Always make sure your horse is dry before you turn him back out, blanket or no.
EDIT- For future reference, if it is sooo cold that you are worried about taking his blanket off for half an hour, you probably shouldn’t be riding/ working him. Riding when it is very cold is quite hard on joints and lungs. I feel that horses can safely be ridden with temps into the teens, but in a properly maintained indoor, where the top soil isn’t frozen and hard and the wind isn’t a factor. A horse can definitely work in 30 degree weather safely and he wont die or catch cold if you remove his blanket for work.
