Getting Horse to Stand Still for Hoof Trimming?
My horse will not stand still for anything when he is getting his hooves trimmed. My farrier has to fight with him to keep his legs up. He also tried to nip him in the butt while he’s trimming him. He’s a 5 year old gelding
Well, I hate to break it to you and Iam certainly by no means being rude, but your pony needs manners my dear. He needs to learn that standing there is easier then him moving around all over the place. Which it is. Also, is your farrier rough? He might be resisting to him being rough and if not, and if its just his own little issue, you need to take some time and teach him to stand still in ANY situation. Especially with a farrier bc a farriers job is dangerous and they certainly dont need to be tolerating ill mannered horses. The easiest way to teach a horse to stand is to work on his ground manners on the ground with a halter and a lead rope. Simply take him into your ring / arena or wherever you have that you can work him and when you stop, expect him to stop UNTIL you say to come back forward to you or to move away. The best way to do this is in a round pen. free lounge him in a round pen and when you say whoa, and he stops (which might take some time) then let him stand there…if he goes to step away step into him abruptly and say “whoa!”. He’ll get the hang of it. Let him stand there for small amounts of time and then tell him to come to you, or walk up to him,. give him a scratch on the face and walk back to where you were…DONT let him follow you if he does, make him back up to where he started. I have a 3yo that stands still and follows me, never has to be tied, stands beautifully with the farrier just because I took a little extra time! Soon enough, you’ll have a well mannered horse who stands still all the time !!! : 0) Also, make sure youre taking the time to work with his feet, he just needs a little manners adjustment and some reasurrance that he is safe and sound.
And my best recomendation would to NOT tie him…stand and hold him, tying him up might aggrivate him more and you might have a much bigger issue on your hands!
Good Luck! : 0)
EDIT***
I also agree with dressagerider in that you need to play with his feet more, consistantly and you and your shoer should absolutley be correcting and reassuring him during the process.
