Field Boots
As summer disappears, so does the need to walk around bare foot or in skimpy, barely there sandals, exposing your feet to as much fresh air as possible. Winter brings with it socks, slippers and perpetual ice blocks at the ends of your legs. Fortunately winter also brings with it new fashions in shoes so that your pins can always look stylish no matter the weather.
Winter 2007 looks to be an eclectic season with ballerina flats, animal prints, and boots, particularly equestrian and biker boots in vogue. Ballerina flats typically have round toes and come in a range on materials and colours. This winter animal prints, metallics – especially gold, and velvets are the big sellers. Some variations on the typical flat include a sexy low heel or vamp and ankle ties.
Mary Jane’s are also in fashion, as is the colour red and the shiny patent look. The name Mary Jane is an American term for a strap shoe or sandal that has low heels, broad, rounded and closed toes and a buckle strap across the instep and/or around the ankle. They used to be made primarily of black patent leather. These days they come in all colours and all materials including suede and canvas. Mary Jane’s were also primarily known as little girl’s shoes, and only occasionally as shoes for little boys. Now they are also shoes for grown women, although in the case of women they are more informal than they are for children.
The more modern Mary Jane’s have also had heels added to them as well as thick, platform soles. Punk rockers and Goths adopted the shoes in particular, although some others would vamp up the “Lolita” look and wear them with high knit socks and a very short paid, pleated schoolgirl skirt.
Another trend this winter is the peep-toe shoe. It sounds a little crazy because you would assume that your feet would freeze, but we are assured by people in the know that they are no colder than wearing regular pumps. Of course you have to wear them with pantyhose, the seamless kind, but the colour and pattern is up to you. This winter, pantyhose is a fashion free for all, anything goes. This trend has the added advantage of combining two trends in one as it also incorporates the high heel trend. High heels are in and if you can stand it, the higher the better.
Boots are also in fashion; they never really go out of fashion. Various styles may become more popular than others during different years, but boots are always popular. You simply can’t beat a good pair of boots. This season equestrian and biker boots are in. It’s quite interesting that boots made for such practical purposes have become such fashion desirables. One wouldn’t think that they had that much aesthetic appeal. But fashion is a fickle and flaky business; there is no telling what it will adopt next.
To demonstrate the practical nature of equestrian boots lets have a look at what they are exactly. They’re tall, ending just below the knee and can be divided in three different categories: field boots, dress boots and hunting boots. The one chosen by fashion is probably the field boot with lacing at the ankle, which allows the ankle to flex a bit when jumping over fences. They are favoured by police officers on motorcycles or on mounted patrols and by some police agencies as part of their “Class A” uniform. Most of the boots come in black although some are available in brown.
Biker boots have an outside appearance of a typical boot but they have shorter heels so that the bikers are able to keep control of the bike while they ride. They are often customised with extra buckles or toecaps and chains to make them look rougher and tougher as a reflection on the rider.
Lastly, the one winter footwear item that is absolutely indispensable – slippers. For something a little different this year, you might want to try Bright Feet Slippers. These nifty slippers have little headlights in the toes to light your way around a darkened house at night so you don’t have to switch lights on and disturb anybody else, or bump your toes, knees, elbows or head on objects that weren’t there during the day time. They have light sensors so that the lights don’t come on when you don’t need them, saving you on the lithium batteries that operate it. Weight sensors activate the LED in each slipper and they activate. They light up an area of about 25 feet in front of you and have a built in timer system that delays the shut off system long enough for you to see your way back to bed. If those aren’t the coolest in nighttime footwear, then I don’t know what is.
