Bumper Spurs
ATTENTION BARREL RACERS..do bumper spurs work?
ok so i’ve gotten to the point where my horse can fast canter the striaght parts and faast trot the barrels. he’s doing great!
although i cant keep him cantering around the barrels..so i was thinknig to get bumper spurs..do they help?? will i be able to keep him cantering around the barrels?? can you make the horse GO (by go i mean as fast as it can)

Before you go on and spur your horse around those barrels, make sure he is comfortable doing it. Maybe he isn’t cantering around the barrels because he is too stiff.
Do the Funnel or Corkscrew drill/exercise to find out.
Lope a big circle, and gradually make the circle smaller until the horse struggles, then bring it back out and stop. Do it both directions, and if your horse can’t easily lope a 5-10 foot circle, you shouldn’t be trying to lope the pattern.
If you do this and find out your horse can lope a small circle, but still doesn’t lope around the barrel, I would defenitly say ‘Yes, get bumper spurs!’
I use them on my barrel horse because he needs more encouraging to pick up his leads.
They are pretty dull, so you might find that you need a little ’sharper’ spur. However, that’s usually not the case.
Try the Funnel Drill first, then get spurs.
